Gear Review: Coleman LED Quad Lantern

Coleman Quad LED LanternI just got back from a wonderful night backyard camping with my two boys (check one off the August Adventure Bucket List) and not only did I spend some quality bonding time with my little hooligans, I was able to test out my brand new Coleman Quad Lantern.

So before I start, here’s a quick description:

This lantern is made up of four separate quadrants that combine into a single base unit. The base unit runs off of 8 D batteries while the each quadrant runs off of two rechargeable AA batteries.

I’m not going to beat around the bush, I LOVE this lantern and here’s why:

It is bright: It provides 190 lumens when all four panels are combine. Since I really don’t know what a lumen is, I simply had it stand it side by side with my Coleman Battery-Powered Family Size and the Quad blew it out of the water.

It is useful: Since each quadrant is detachable, there really isn’t much of a need for separate flashlights. Each of my boys could use their own attachment while they were walking around.

Design: Attaching and detaching each quadrant was a breeze.  If there was one area I was the most skeptical it was how easily they could attach/detach. My three year old figured out how to do it without any instruction. That actually became a pain as he decided to undo all them just for fun and then ran away from me when I tried to get them back. Gotta love kids. The rechargeable batteries are also replaceable with standard batteries, which proves it was very well thought out.

One minor downside: The one slightly negative thing I have to say about the lantern is the size. It is a bit on the big side, but given all that this lantern does it really didn’t impact my overall impression.

Overall, I see this lantern as a game changer for my camping trips. It will  replace my two crappy Ozark Trail personal size lanterns and perhaps a couple extra flashlights that I always pack. I’ll still utilize my other Coleman lantern, but it will most likely be reserved for inside the tent.
